3 Effective Mindsets to Building An Opt In Email List

You’ve just started your business or perhaps you’ve been at it awhile and you’ve finally come to the conclusion that building an opt in email list is a must for your long-term success.  After doing a lot of research and reading about all the success stories of people really making it big and making good money on the web, you see a common component of every single one of these businesses. They’ve all built a targeted email list.

Of course after doing all this research in building an opt in email list you think you have it all down and you’re ready to do it yourself in a big way. You follow all this advice and…..no luck….you still aren’t able to make a profit.

And with all this hard work you may even be losing money.  You may be sourcing out your work, like having others writing your content for the free report you are giving your prospects, web hosting for your landing or squeeze pages, managing your email list or any other costs involved with getting the word out to add prospects to your list.

You might even be building an opt in email list that gets really big,  but then only a very small percentage of your subscribers actually buy from you and your still spending more than earning. You know how everybody says that ‘the money is in the list’, but you shake your head and get so frustrated that you just give up on the idea.

So what’s the problem? Why does building an opt in email list that’s profitable elude so many businesses?  Well, there are a number of reasons and it takes more than an article to discuss the many factors. So with that said, today I want to discuss 3 major mindsets that will give you the foundation you need to succeed building an email opt in list.

But… before I start… realize that the single most important task you can do to have a successful long-term business is to build a list.  Don’t and I mean DO NOT neglect learning how to build and then successfully monetize your targeted email list.

The idea of a mindset is basically an attitude or perspective that you base all your marketing and advertisings efforts toward building an opt in email list. These are critical to have before you even start a list. Having these mindsets when building an opt in email list will help you on your way to mastering list building the right way. All the techniques in the world are useless unless you have the proper attitude to utilize them.

1)      Quality is more important than quantity.

You want to always build your list in a way that attracts quality subscribers. Really… a person with a quality list will have huge success.  You can have a million subscribers and if it’s low quality, you could end up losing more money than making a profit from that list.

This mindset that you only want a quality list requires more effort and expertise than just using any source in building an opt in email list.

I’m not going to go into detail of the how’s of building a list as much as focusing on having the mindset as the proper foundation for your list building success.

2)      The mindset of having only one person on your list. Many list owners make the mistake of communicating with their list like they are talking to the masses. DON’T

At every part of building an opt in email list you want to talk to your subscribers as though they are the only person on your list. You need to connect with your subscribers on a one on one basis. Make them feel that every email you sent them was just meant for them. To be honest most people really don’t want to be on someone’s list, but they get on that list for a particular outcome to solve the problems THEY have.  They want to communicate with some one that understands their needs and can help them. Have that mindset when maintaining and building an opt in email list and you will have much success.

3)      Build it for one person… then replicate it a million times. Start building an opt in email list for the perfect prospect in mind. When you can create the landing pages and marketing methods to find that perfect prospect then you can replicate that over and over.

What’s the use of adding tons of prospects or subscribers that have no interest in what you have to offer? Just think of the franchising principle. Ray Crock the founder of McDonalds was a master of having this mindset. He built a restaurant that actually made lots of money and then he replicated these restaurants many times over.  I’d say he succeeded from using this mindset.

Some final thoughts.  Building an opt in email list is done one person at a time.  Don’t talk to the masses, but talk to each person on your list as though they were sitting right next to you in person.  Don’t be fake and act like you are some huge company. People want to connect to you on a one to one basis. Even if you are a big company with a huge list, still don’t act big. You’re going to have more rapport and more responsive customers or subscribers acting small and personable. This doesn’t mean you have to be unprofessional by any means, but just be personable.
